Version 8.04 of Ubuntu includes a clever piece of software called Wubi that lets you install Ubuntu within the Windows file system. In other words, there is no need to repartition your hard disk. Aside from this, there is no major difference between a partitioned installation and a Wubi installation. Wubi works by creating a loopback file system; that is, it creates a single large file within the Windows file system, and that file is then used as the Ubuntu file system. Wubi is a nice way to try out Ubuntu on a more permanent basis than using the live distro mode. The biggest issue is that Wubi requires at least 256MB of memory and 5GB of hard disk space, although this shouldn t present any problems for relatively modern computers.
