Testing is one of those areas that far too many people let fall by the wayside. Often in development, it is one of those areas that is still left until the end. This is starting to change as developers are beginning to use test-driven development. Test-driven development is based on the idea that test cases can help drive development. In this section, I will present two basic areas of testing: unit testing and integration testing. I ll also provide details on the TestNG framework.

If you have written any applications professionally, you probably have some experience with unit testing, or at least you should have. Unit testing tests individual Java files to make sure they meet your coding needs. By using unit testing, you can test your Java files under different use cases. Thus, one class file should often test multiple items, including positive and negative outcomes. This can be especially useful when it comes to performing testing on classes that deal with business logic. The only limitation, of course, is that if your classes have parent classes in other packages or call different packages, those parent classes must be part of the import. This became exceptionally difficult when using EJB 2.1 to test your business logic. If you had your business logic wrapped inside the bean itself, it became fairly hard to write your testing units. You had to wrap J2EE EJB JARs into your testing packages. This made it hard to run quick unit tests and is one of the reasons that we now have POJO-based EJBs. Having POJOs allows a much more simple approach to performing testing, because we can test our objects within the framework of the class itself. If this class calls a persistence tier, you can modify it accordingly. You can perform testing in a multitude of ways; most people end up using a testing framework. The two most popular Java frameworks out there are JUnit and TestNG. The examples in this chapter use TestNG.
