Create a schedule for update testing and deployment. Create a schedule that calls for rapid testing and deployment of critical and important software updates but that also allows for potential delays.

Although companies create software updates to resolve security issues and software issues, such updates occasionally create issues of their own, such as breaking functionality of an existing line-of-business (LOB) application on your network. Testing updates in a test lab or on a subset of the computers on the network helps to identify any issues that might arise as a result of the specific circumstances of the network and the applications running on it. The information gathered during testing makes it possible to resolve identified issues or reevaluate the need for an incompatible update before commencing with a full-scale deployment. Use the following sections to create a test environment that fits the size of your network and resources available.

As mentioned, we have defined some text boxes, labels, and other controls in our test project, but they all have their autogenerated names (for example, textBox1 or label1). We can use the rename feature to give meaningful names to these controls, starting from three different places within the IDE: the Properties window, in the code, and Solution Explorer. The first place we can use the renaming feature is in the Properties window at design time. So far in our test project, we ve used the form name Form1. In the next exercise, we ll rename Form1 to TestProjectForm. The expectation is that this change gets propagated throughout the code in the project. But just to see how the functionality works, we ll look into all files where the Form1 symbol is used.

Large enterprises should consider using a formal test lab that mimics the production network as closely as possible. The test lab should have the following characteristics:
