ith IT cost escalating, IT departments are always on the hunt for ways to reduce cost without negatively affecting operations A key target for cost savings is removing unnecessary redundancy within an organization, such as duplicate routines in software applications A duplicate routine is stealthy in that no one can see its drain on IT resources Web services offer a new approach to designing a cost-effective infrastructure by organizing commonly used routines into services that can be invoked by any application that needs them Let s say that multiple applications need to perform a credit check on customers The credit check routine can be a web service called by each application, rather than a routine built into each application This not only reduces redundancy of code but also eliminates the need to modify multiple routines whenever the credit check routines are modified A web services infrastructure consists of a client and a web service A client is software that requests a web service A J2ME MIDlet is capable of becoming a web service client and can access any web service that it is authorized to use within a corporate web services infrastructure You ll learn about web services in this chapter and how to make your MIDlet a web services client You ll need to pick up a copy of J2EE: The Complete Reference (McGraw-Hill/Osborne, 2002) if you want to learn how to create a web service Web services are built using J2EE technology because J2EE addresses the complex issues that a programmer faces when developing a large-scale distributive system

A common misunderstanding regarding web services is that the web component comes from the relationship between web services and the Internet This isn t true Web services are a web of software building blocks (routines) that are available on a network from which programmers can efficiently create large-scale distributive systems Three standards were developed with the introduction of web services: Web Services Description Language (WSDL), Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI), and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) Programmers use WSDL to publish their web service, thereby making the web service available to other programmers over the network They use UDDI to locate web services that have been published and SOAP to invoke a particular web service

Numerous web services are used in a typical large-scale distributive system, and each service is associated with a tier in the multi-tier architecture that is used to share resources over a corporate infrastructure A tier is an abstract concept that defines a group of technologies that provide one or more services to clients One way to understand a tier structure s organization is to draw a parallel to a typical large corporation (see Figure 14-1)
