In some cases, you might design a report that you intend to open from several locations in your application, and you can t guarantee that the form to provide filter values will always be open. Or, you might have multiple reports that need the same filter criteria, and you don t want to have to design a separate filter form for each report. To solve these problems, you can add code to the report to have it open its own filter dialog box from the report s Open event procedure. Let s go back to the Housing Reservations application (Housing.mdb) to take a look at a report that uses this technique. In the Housing Reservations application, both the rptFacilityOccupancy report and the rptFacilityRevenueChart report depend on a single form, fdlgReportDateRange, to provide a starting and ending date for the report. To see the rptFacilityOccupancy report, you can start the application by opening the frmSplash form, sign on as an administrator (Viescas, John L. or LaMee, Brian), click the Reports button on the main switchboard, and then click the Reservations button in the Facilities category on the Reports switchboard. (You can also simply open the report directly from the Database window.) When you open the report, you ll see a dialog box prompting you for the dates you want as shown in Figure 23-31 on the next page.

As with the first example, generating classes directly from the database may be sufficient. In the following command, we can generate a set of classes in the LinqInAction namespace to a file called Common.cs. The generated code will be in C# and will include stored procedures in addition to the tables.

Other times, it may be helpful to generate the metadata first. Do this by directing SqlMetal at your database and sending the results to a file called LiaMetadata.xml as follows:

1. Loads the appropriate kernel and HAL images (Ntoskrnl.exe and Hal.dll by default) as well as any of their dependencies. If Winload fails to load either of these files, it prints the message Windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt , followed by the name of the file. 2. Boot device drivers are drivers necessary to boot the system. These drivers are indicated in the registry by a start value of SERVICE_BOOT_START (0). Every device driver has a registry subkey under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services. For example, Services has a subkey named fvevol for the BitLocker driver, which you can see in Figure 13-2. (For a detailed description of the Services registry entries, see the section Services in 4.)

Unless you ve reloaded the sample data, the database contains reservations from April 1, 2003, through November 1, 2003, so asking for a report for June, July, and August should work nicely. Enter the dates you want and click Go to see the report, as shown in Figure 23-32.

This generated metadata file is an XML file that can be modified to adjust the names of the classes, properties, and columns. Once the metadata is extracted to the XML file, we can use the following command to generate classes based on the metadata rather than going back to the database again:
