Creating a control at runtime involves a few simple steps: 1. Create the control object as you would any other class. 2. Set the properties for the control (including basics like size and position). 3. Add the control object to the Controls collection of a container control, like a Form, GroupBox, Panel, or TabPage. 4. If you want to handle any of the control s events, use the appropriate delegate code to hook up your event handler. To demonstrate this process, consider the sample button generator program shown in Figure 21-5. This program creates a button at the specified position every time the user clicks the Create button. The first button in this form will use the ODP.NET DAO to read some data from the Oracle database into a dataset and then display it in the grid on the right. When you use the DAAB, you do not need to manually create and open a connection yourself. You simply ask the DatabaseFactory class to hand you one. This can be done using the DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase method call. The argument passed in to this method is the name of the connection string entry you ve created earlier in the app.config file. If you do not pass in any arguments, the default connection string will be used. To run a query that returns a DataSet object, you no longer need to build the DataAdapter object manually. The DAAB abstracts these steps by representing them with a single function call, ExecuteDataSet. This method takes in a command object and returns a DataSet filled with the execution results. If you have a modestly detailed user interface, you ll need some extremely messy calculations to determine the correct coordinates and size for each element. One way to deal with these problems is to use a control layout engine, as described in the next section.

For each record in the data set, the server must perform the step of skipping to the piece of the record that represents the weight of the product. It does this by using an offset provided to it by the table s meta information, or schema, which informs the server that the weight part of the record is at byte offset x. While this operation is not complicated, it adds to the overall complexity of the calculation being done inside the loop. So, how can we provide our database server with a mechanism capable of addressing these problems We need a system that eliminates the need to scan through all of our records, reduces the amount of memory required for the operation (loading all the record data), and avoids the need to find the weight part inside the whole record.

One way to solve the retrieval problems in our example would be to make a narrower set of data containing only the weight of the product, and have the record identifier point to where the rest of the record data could be found. We can presort this new set of weights and record pointers from smallest weight to the largest weight. With this new sorted structure, instead of loading the entire set of full records into memory, our database server could load the smaller, more streamlined set of weights and pointers.
